Parigi

We tried Parigi on Friday night and it was extremely disappointing.  The service was extremely slow - the meal lasted 3 hours- and Ryan had to keep getting up to remind the waitress to bring us things. Worst of all, the food was ridiculously overpriced.  My "first course" sized pasta was $21.  Ryan asked to make his tortellini an entree size and they marked it up to $32!!!  Not worth it.  Add the fact that the location is awful and is where restaurants go to die, I don't see this place lasting more than 2-3 years.

Between the group at our table, we've pretty much tried all the pastas.  I ordered the best - Pappardelle al Ragu (classic veal ragu bolognese).  Ryan's tortellini with cream sauce was ok; but I thought it had a funky taste.

I won't be going back here unless someone begs me to.

Sauce on the Side

I tried Clayton's new calzone place today and I was pleasantly surprised.  I had heard good things, but I was skeptical.  The restaurant is in a pretty ugly building next to Quiznos, but the interior was actually pretty sharp (and clean!).

Like the name suggests, their menu is full of different calzone options, and instead of filling the calzones with sauce that runs all over the place as you try to eat it, they give you the sauce in a cup on the side for you to pour/dip at your leisure.  Delicious and neat!

I had planned to get the "Meat me in St. Louis" calzone (you can guess the main ingredients of that one) but I quickly changed my mind when I read the monthly special - The "Cock A Doodle Noodle"... Mozzarella, Provel, chicken, green onions, pancetta and Macaroni and cheese, with a side sauce of buffalo butter sauce.

It was amazing!  I ate the whole thing!  And if you are curious, the buffalo butter sauce was just a creamier/buttery version of buffalo sauce (it reminded me of the buffalo sauce at CBW, but a little thicker).

Hurry to Sauce on the Side to try the special before September ends!  Trust me...there is always next month to try the regular menu items.

5 Star Burgers

I went to 5 Star Burgers the other day for lunch in Clayton.  I've been missing a good burger place ever since Fatted Calf left and 5 Star does not disappoint.  Their burger selections are unique and it's hard to find a burger that's been done before, besides their original burger.  I decided to try their green chile burger and it was great.  It had great texture and great chile flavor and had just enough kick without being overly spicy.

As a side my coworker suggested their cheese curds.  What are those?!?! They are kind of like mini mozzarella sticks but instead of being breaded, they have a flakey shell of fried batter around them.  AMAZING!  I'd probably get a large order for the table next time and would skip the fries.

For dessert they have the perfectly sized ice cream shooters.  We all got the salted caramel and it was a great end to a great meal!

Katie's Pizzeria Cafe

Earlier this summer, some coworkers and I went to lunch nearby at Katie's Pizzeria Cafe (aka Katie's Pizza).  I had been there for dinner a couple times before and really enjoyed each time, so I wanted to see what it was like for lunch.  Also, I heard how the business itself was up for sale, so I wanted to go eat there before ownership changed.

They had a nice lunch special where you could have a salad and a personal pizza for $14.  It even includes specialty salad (I got the Caprese Salad) and specialty pizzas (I got the Tre Amici - with Genoa Salami, Italian Sausage, Pancetta and Fontina - which is normally a $21 pizza!)

Caprese Salad
Service was pretty bad (waitress had to come back to re ask our order and she was quite slow with bringing us our food and our check), but the food was good!  Overall, I like Katie's Pizza because it is unique.  The pizza combinations on the menu are very creative, and you can tell she uses fresh ingredients.  The pizzas are also made with a true Italian style, where entire toppings are laid out on top of the pizza, as opposed to being chopped up and spread around.  If you go for dinner, I also would recommend sharing the eggplant appetizer (fried eggplant rolled and stuffed with four Italian cheeses and herbs with marinara sauces for dipping) which won me over.

Note that Katie Lee, the namesake of Katie's Pizzeria, is starting up a new restaurant in Rock Hill called Katie's Pizza and Pasta.  It is set to open November 2013 and I can't wait to try it!

The Libertine

Hey friends!

Jessie and I had a twin dinner last night at a new hot spot in Clayton on Forsyth called The Libertine.  We weren't sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised!

We first looked to make a reservation that afternoon, but everything was booked between 6-9pm that night, so we thought we'd try to walk in and get some seats at the bar.  There were plenty of bar seats but all of the spots filled up fast, so get there early (like before 6:30).

Instead of bread, they bring a mini frying pan full of fried garbanzo beans with a pork seasoning.  They were great to munch on and weren't as filling as typical bread.  Very good start!

The menu is divided into three sections: Vegetables, Meat and Fish.  Jessie and I decided to split a vegetable dish and then each get our own entree.  We split the Illinois Asparagus, which was with Black Garlic Romesco, Midwest Caviar, Fried Potato Balls, and Boiled Farm Egg.  It was really really good and the sauce was superb.  Note that is it more of a cold veggie dish, so be prepared.  The people next to us at the bar ordered the Pan Roasted Cauliflower and they said it was really good.  We'd probably try that next time.

Illinois Asparagus
I was in the mood for red meat, so I ordered the Hanger Steak, which came with Bacon Cheddar Gratin and strips of fried potato skins.  The potatoes were awesome and the steak was cooked just the way I like it, Medium Rare/Rare and extremely juicy!  Note that they didn't ask me how I wanted it prepared, and I didn't say anything because I was curious how it would come out.  I was happy with the redness of the meat, but if you like your meat cooked more, definitely speak up.  I was in red meat heaven!

Hanger Steak and Bacon Cheddar Gratin
Jessie ordered the best dish of the night... Three Little Birds, which is a trio of Roasted Game Hen, Chicken & Quail, over Rice Grits with Fried Okra.  Jessie is big on ordering chicken dishes at restaurants (Hello, Brasserie's Roasted Chicken!) so this menu item jumped out at her immediately.  We were expecting three small pieces of bird on the plate, but instead a single piece of meat arrived... it was all combined into one.  It was the best piece of bird I've ever had.  Super juicy and just absolutely mouth watering.  I could've eaten the entire thing in addition to my steak, but unfortunately it was Jessie's dish, and I only got a bite or two.  The rice grits and corn were a great combination too.  Not too gritsy, it has more of a mashed potato texture.  Jessie cleaned her plate.

Three Little Birds - Game Hen, Chicken, Quail over Rice Grits

Jessie and I were enjoying our meal so much, and our friend, Danielle, was coming to meet us any minute, so we decided to indulge in some dessert.  We were going to try the Libertine Candy Bar, which was salted caramel, hazelnuts, and chocolate ganache, but the waitress scared us off because she said there was coconut oil on it and that it tasted coconutty.  We weren't feeling coconut, so we stuck to a more Josie friendly dessert and got the Coffee-Coffee Cake with Creme Fraiche Ice Cream.  It came out in sort of bread pudding type of crumbles and small chunks of graham cracker sticking out throughout it.  It was yummy, but I think next time we'll be brave and try the candy bar dessert, as it is their specialty.

Coffee-Coffee Cake
Overall, the meal was awesome and we'd definitely go back.  We'd probably try to sit at the bar again, or maybe outside at the sidewalk tables.  I think we lucked out by our amazing menu picking skills, because two people next to us ordered the Terrine Board and they said it was weird.  Definitely go with the meats and split a fun veggie dish (or try the She-Crab Soup because the guy in front of us had it and it looked incredible!).  Hurray for Clayton having a fun night time restaurant!  Hope it is here to stay!

Pasta Plus!

My name isn't JosiePasta for nothing... I love my pasta!  That's why one time during a summer internship at my current law firm I fell in love with a place called Pasta Plus.  We were having one of those LexisNexis tutorials during lunch, so they catered from the local Italian Diner in downtown Clayton.  I'm pretty sure I got back up 3 times for another scoop of their pasta con broccoli.... it was so creamy and decadent, and the shell shaped noodles were perfect to capture the sauce.

Two years had passed and I never had the chance to eat it again.  All I knew was that catered tub of pasta, I wasn't quite sure how the restaurant would be and I was too chicken to go by myself.  Finally, Jessie called me one day and asked to meet me for lunch in Clayton and pasta was on my mind (when is it not?!) so I suggested Pasta Plus.  We went at the perfect time and there was no line.  It was a walk up counter and the menu was full of every standard pasta dish you could think of: spaghetti and meatballs, fettuccine alfredo, mostaccioli, toasted ravioli... the list goes on and on.  It also has classic Italian sub sandwiches as well.  Very casual, with classic Italian checkered table clothes and framed posters of The Sopranos on the wall.  I already knew what I was getting before I walked in... Pasta Con Broccoli!!!  Jessie had the same.  They brought out our food to us, and just in time, because only 5 minutes after we ordered, the line got really long.

Pasta Con Broccoli
The pasta con broccoli was so good and just as creamy as I remembered; however, maybe I've grown up since being a summer associate, because I could almost taste the unhealthiness of each greasy bite.  Oh well, it was amazing, and was a great treat!  It also came with two slices of the softest Italian bread I've ever eaten.  I saved it for the end and used it to sop up the leftover sauce.

Pasta Plus is a great idea for a fun catered event, and I really enjoyed stopping in for a quick, casual bite to eat.  Whenever I can't resist my pasta craving, I'm definitely heading up there again!

Restaurant Review: Bocci Bar

I am always excited when a new restaurant comes to Clayton, so last year when I heard the owners of Barcelona and Coastal Bistro (aka Mosaic) were adding another restaurant along Central Avenue called Bocci Bar, I knew I had to check it out.  Jessie and I first checked it out one random Thursday night early last summer.  Like most of the restaurants on Central, Bocci Bar is long and skinny, and in the warmer months they open the entire front wall of the restaurant to have patio seating.  Jessie and I got a table for two right where the wall would have been if it were a colder night.  The weather was perfect, and Thursday nights at Bocci are booming.  Luckily the service didn't suffer that night, we got a good red wine recommendation and ordered a meatball appetizer (Delicious!).  For an entree we ordered one of their specialties, Lobster Spaghetti (light, and lick your bowl clean, good!).  It was a really enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, I had the opportunity to go back a few weeks ago for lunch with a co-worker.  In an 7 month span, things weren't looking good.  First, we walk in and there is no hostess to seat us.  I look around and notice the restaurant is over half empty and I can't even find a waiter to grab his attention.  My co-worker points out a man in a red sweater and light-washed jeans and tells me he is a waiter... um... doesn't look like one!  In fact, none of them are dressed in uniform! They are all dressed casual!  Strange...

Anyway, the restaurant is half empty yet we get sat in the very back "private room" where they keep four square tables.  We sit there forever before we have to beg someone to bring us some bread.  It finally arrives at the same time our salads arrive.  The bread is pretty good, it reminds me of Pizza Hut bread sticks (think long and skinny and coated with Parmesan cheese) but nicer.  The Bocci salad to start was good,  light and lemony, but I was saving up for the main course... Lobster BLT Pizza!  Bocci Bar's menu really has some fun lobster dishes (hence the lobster spaghetti I ordered last time) so I knew it had to be good.  The lobster pizza came with applewood bacon, tomato, crème fraiche & arugula and I could taste lobster in every bite.  Delicious but really rich; I could only take down 2 pieces.  Lobster is definitely the way to go here!

Lobster BLT Pizza
Overall, Bocci Bar's menu is really impressive, however, they lack in service (at least they do during lunch time).  What should have been a 45 minute lunch, turned into a 2 hour waiting fest with good food.  I probably wouldn't go back for lunch (since I'm never really in the mood for long lunches during the work week anyway) but I would go back for drinks and dinner on a Thursday or Friday night.  I'll probably wait until summer so I can sit out on the front patio and not get stuck in the back of that long skinny room and be forgotten about.

Tucci and Fresta's

Pasta House owners have opened a new Italian restaurant called Tucci and Fresa's, now located in the old Portabello's in downtown Clayton.

After hearing good reviews from a couple of people, I forced some co-workers to go try it out for lunch one day.  (yes... I had to force them since hearing the words "Pasta House" made it sound less appealing)

The lunch menu looked really good, with everything from salads, soups, to flatbreads and sandwiches, to pasta and meat entrees, and all at a pretty good price.  The dinner menu looked very similar to the lunch menu, with a few additions, but the prices were about twice as much as the lunch!  I hope they get twice as big portions then!

I started out with their house salad, which to my disappointment, wasn't at all like the famous Pasta House salad!  It was good, but I kinda expected the salad to be drenched in that yummy Pasta House dressing! (pretty much the only good thing about Pasta House).

For my entree I tried their Tortellini con Salsiccia, their trattoria specialty.  The portion was very generous, but nothing I couldn't take down.  Very good overall, especially the meaty sauce.  I definitely recommend it!

Tortellini con Salsiccia

The sandwiches looked good too!  The top choice, the Chicken Portobello Sandwich, which is a grilled chicken breast with sauteed mushrooms and fresh mozzarella.  Yum Yum!

Chicken Portobello Sandwich

The service was really nice too.  The waiters were very friendly and since the restaurant was new, were very attentive and asking our opinions about what we thought.  The only mishap was they messed up some of the prices on our check, but they cleared it up no problem.  Overall, no need to avoid Tucci and Fresta's if you are afraid of the Pasta House, because there are no similarities between the two.  It truly is a great Italian addition to Clayton for all of us who have become sick of eating at Cafe Napoli.

Restaurant Review: Half & Half

A few weeks ago, Jessie, Josie, Carolyn and I met up for brunch at Half & Half, the breakfast joint created by the owners of The Good Pie that opened up this summer in downtown Clayton.  I had been wanting to try Half & Half for a while, but it is only open until 2:30 most days, and is closed on Sundays... my most common brunch day!  Half & Half was in the news recently because it will soon be open for dinnertime, but as a completely different restaurant!!!  That's right, early next year, the restaurant will add evening hours, at which time the restaurant’s name will be changed to Medianoche and will serve Mexican cuisine.  Two restaurants in one?!?!  Insane!!!

When we walked inside, we were a little surprised with the atmosphere.  It seemed like they tore down a wall between two separate buildings, and never really meshed them together.  On the right side there were tables and an eating area, and on the left there was a big open area of emptiness, with the bar along the wall and the back side open into the kitchen.  This restaurant has been open for 4 months and it still looks like they are renovating.

Waste of Space
Luckily it was a beautiful day outside, so we could sit on the patio out on the sidewalk and not be stuck inside.  The indoor decor was not the only thing out of whack.  The entire wait staff was incredibly unprofessional, as if it was all their first day on the job.  After waiting a while, they finally brought out Josie's coffee, and luckily we were busy chatting and she didn't get a chance to taste it yet, because a few minutes later they came out and said "sorry, I think we gave you bad coffee."  Sure enough, we look down at the coffee and it has a clear ring of water around the edge of it and it is stone cold.  Rookie mistake for not such a rookie restaurant.

Thumbs down for the Coffee
Luckily the menu looked good!  Half & Half's menu changes each month, with an additional seasonal weekend brunch menu.  In addition to breakfast food, they also have a small list of sandwiches and burgers, but I was there for the breakfast!  This isn't your typical IHOP menu, it is small, and mainly focused on trendy egg dishes.  I ordered the Steak and Eggs which consisted of two sunny side up eggs, hanger steak, potatoes, hollandaise & tobacco onions.  It was really good!  Unfortunately they forgot the hollandaise sauce... but I reminded them and they brought me some on the side for dipping, which is probably how I would've preferred it anyway.  And the sourdough toast was great to sop up the egg yolk and scoop up the steak bits.

Steak and Eggs
Josie ordered the veggie hash with two sunny side up eggs, brussel sprouts, spinach, onions and potatoes.  It came out in a frying pan and looked really yummy too.

Veggie Hash
Carolyn went big and got the french toast.  It was huge and she ate every single bite!  So good!

French Toast with Berries
Overall, the food was descent and a good change from your usually breakfast spots.  However, it was a tad overpriced and the staff still hasn't really figured out how to function properly.  Unfortunately, when Carolyn went back in side to use the restroom she saw a cockroach scurry across the giant empty tile floor.  Luckily she told me after I had eaten, because I'm not sure I would've finished my meal otherwise.  I am also a little skeptical of Half & Half being a breakfast place by day and a Mexican restaurant, with a completely different name, by night.  This place needs to get its act together and start acting like a well established restaurant.

Restaurant Review: The Fatted Calf

The Fatted Calf... wait... isn't that place closed???  Nope, it is still kickin (but not quite hoppin).

As most of you St. Louisans known, the Fatted Calf was set to close at the end of this past June due to lack of business.  After hearing the news, people in the area, and hundreds of Clayton's business people, showed up at the Fatted Calf in droves.  Some went to fight to save the 40 year old establishment, considered a historic landmark in Clayton.  Others went to say their "goodbyes" and have one last fatted calf burger with soft spread cheddar (we'll call those people pessimists ;-)).  Either way, business dramatically increased, allowing the Fatted Calf to continue past its expiration date.

When my co-workers announced that we'd be going to the Fatted Calf for lunch this week, I have to admit I had mixed feelings.  My first feeling came directly from my stomach.  I instantly started craving a fatted calf burger with a scoop of that yummy soft cheddar spread.  However, my hunger suddenly turned into a confusion of emotions... didn't I already say goodbye? (yes... I'm a pessimist) Why won't the Fatted Calf stop playing with my emotions?!??!  Well... I got over it pretty fast once I walked into the dimmed restaurant, that almost looks like a Swiss barn from the outside, and smelled those yummy burgers.  I'm glad I get another chance!  I wasn't ready to say goodbye last June!

So I ordered the usual... fatted calf burger (which is a 1/3 pound of beef) cooked medium with a soft scoop of sharp cheddar cheese (amazing!) and lettuce and tomatoes.  I usually get an order of steak fries, but I am trying to be good before Jessie's wedding, so I had to forgo those, but I didn't mind, because they do not usually have enough seasoning and I'd have to put a lot of salt on them anyway.

Medium Fatted Calf Burger with soft cheddar spread, lettuce and tomato

The burger came out amazing, nice, juicy and pink in the center.  The soft scoop of cheese melted perfectly onto the burger once I spread it out with a knife.  It was the perfect burger combination with the lettuce and tomato.

One of my co-workers ordered the chicken breast sandwich, which is seasoned with chardonnay, olive oil and herbs.  At first I thought he was crazy for not getting a burger, but he said it was actually really good.  I also heard that Ram's Quarterback Sam Bradford (who literally lives less than 100 yards from my office building in Clayton... that's less than a football field!) had gone to the Fatted Calf, tried the chicken sandwich, and said it was the best chicken sandwich he had ever had.  So if you aren't into burgers, it's definitely a valid option.

Overall, the Fatted Calf is delicious!  The only thing that bothered me was how they charge 75 cents per topping (so $1.50 for lettuce and tomato!) and 15 cents for a cup of tap water!  So my meal was more expensive that it should have been.  However, I can't get over their cheddar spread and it keeps me coming back for more.  (Note, if you are a big fan of soft spread cheddar on burgers, I also recommend Blueberry Hill in the Delmar Loop, because they have it too and they have a better overall atmosphere).  Food for thought though: Fatted Calf delivers in the Clayton area, so this may be something to take advantage of during late work nights.

So, the ultimate question...is the Fatted Calf saved for good?  My opinion: the burst of business is probably temporary, because even 2 months later it was just as dead as before.  But as my friend Ashley said it best, I probably won't go back until it's the next time to say goodbye ;-)
